2. SpaceX Starship V3 — Reusability at Scale

SpaceX’s Starship program has graduated from dramatic test explosions to a genuine operational cadence. Starship V3 — taller, heavier, and powered by upgraded Raptor 3 engines — is targeting orbital flight tests in mid-to-late 2026, with the explicit goal of demonstrating rapid reuse: the same vehicle flying again within days of its previous mission.

The numbers are staggering. V3 is designed to carry more than 150 tonnes to low-Earth orbit on a fully reusable stack, at a cost per kilogram that would undercut any existing rocket by a wide margin. All major subsystems — the dual-quadcopter airframe, the Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG), the science payload — are being assembled and integrated at Johns Hopkins APL in Maryland and at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Colorado.

The mission itself is extraordinary: a rotorcraft lander that will fly dozens of separate sorties across the surface of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. Titan has a thick nitrogen atmosphere, lakes of liquid methane, and complex organic chemistry. It is, in many scientists’ view, the most Earth-like environment in the Solar System outside Earth — and yet profoundly alien.

Dragonfly’s science objectives include searching for the chemical building blocks of life in Titan’s organic-rich environment.
